Minsk airport’s new terminal construction timeline clarified

MINSK, 9 March (BelTA) – It will take from two to three years to build a new terminal at the Minsk National Airport, BelTA learned from Vladimir Kostin, Director of the Aviation Department of the Belarusian Transport and Communications Ministry.

The official said: “We expect the number of passengers the Minsk National Airport handles every year to reach 4.1-4.2 million people by 2020. It will be a very good figure. Once the number of passengers reaches 4-4.5 million people per annum, we intend to start the pre-investment feasibility study for building a new terminal in the airport.”

According to Vladimir Kostin, the new terminal will be an expansion of the current terminal. “We intend to satisfy needs of passengers. People always need meals, hotel accommodation, entertainment, free Wi-Fi, and transportation. It is difficult to reconstruct the existing passenger terminal because it was built back in the USSR period for the USSR. Nobody expected the airport to become an international transportation hub. There are plans to build the new terminal using modern light structures and materials,” explained the Director of the Aviation Department of the Belarusian Transport and Communications Ministry.

Vladimir Kostin underlined that the reconstruction of the existing terminal will continue. “We will work on that. For instance, there are plans to build a hotel and arrange free Wi-Fi in the airport,” he said.

Vladimir Kostin also noted that the modernization of regional airports will continue, too. “The air passenger terminals in our oblast capitals were modernized back in the USSR. Now we just keep them in good order. The runways and taxiways as well as the parking apron have already been repaired in Gomel, Grodno, and Mogilev. The runway in the Brest airport will be repaired this year. Apart from that, light signals have been repaired in Gomel, Grodno, and Brest. The regional airports meet all the international requirements. They are certified and can service aircraft at any time,” he stated.
