Belarus expects professional open dialogue at Espoo Convention intermediary session in Geneva

Belarus expects the BelNPP project will get equal treatment during the Espoo Convention intermediary session, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.

A Belarusian delegation will take part in the intermediary session of the meeting of the parties to the Espoo Convention in Geneva on 5-7 February. The meeting is slated to discuss and adopt the draft decisions relating to the general and country-specific compliance with the Espoo Convention and the draft decisions on the application of the Convention to the lifetime extension of nuclear power plants.

“Belarus expects a professional and open dialogue with the participating countries on the BelNPP construction project and has already sent a letter stating its position to the Secretariat of the Convention. Belarus hopes that the participating countries will concur with the opinion of Belarus on the need to apply equal partner approaches to the countries-members of the Espoo Convention and to ensure the compliance with the letter of the Convention.

Lithuania’s complaint against the Belarus nuclear power plant construction project has been under consideration at the Espoo Convention Implementation Committee since June 2011. In 2014, Belarus and Lithuania were recommended to take a number of steps aimed at complying with the Espoo Convention. “Belarus has fully complied with the recommendations related to the BelNPP, and continues to cooperate with Lithuania on the preparation of a bilateral agreement to implement the Espoo Convention and set up a joint agency for a post-project analysis of the BelNPP,” the press service said.
