Mass grain harvesting campaign begins in Belarus

MINSK, 28 July (BelTA) – A nationwide grain harvesting campaign has begun in Belarus, BelTA learned from representatives of the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry.

As of 28 July Belarusian farmers collected grain and leguminous crops from 120,900ha or 5.3% of the planned area. This year’s grain harvesting campaign began later than last year’s.

Southern regions of the country are in the lead, with Gomel Oblast reporting 19% of the planned area as harvested and Brest Oblast reporting 10%. Grodno Oblast and Minsk Oblast are only starting, with slightly more than 1% of the area under crops processed. Mogilev Oblast and Vitebsk Oblast will begin mass harvesting within days.

So far Belarusian farmers have gathered in 369,600 tonnes of grain, with the average yield at 30.6 centners per hectare. The average yield is at 44.1 centners per hectare in Grodno Oblast, 34.5 centners per hectare in Brest Oblast, 30.3 centners per hectare in Minsk Oblast, and 27.7 centners per hectare in Gomel Oblast.

Belarusian agricultural companies have the technical ability to finish harvesting grain and leguminous crops within an optimal period of time.

Scientists expect this year’s harvest to exceed last year’s by 20%. According to preliminary data, there are plans to gather in 7.2 tonnes of grain and leguminous crops (without corn in granary weight terms after processing).
