Belarusian, German judges discussing imposition of punishment in Mogilev

MOGILEV, 23 October (BelTA) – Mogilev hosts a seminar on non-custodial sentences and other criminal penalties where the participants from Belarus and Germany share experience of the application of such penalties and their reformation in Belarus and Germany, BelTA has learnt. The forum is held by the Supreme Court of Belarus jointly with the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation. Taking part in the seminar are judges of the Supreme Court, lawyers and public prosecution officers from the Mogilev, Vitebsk and Gomel oblasts as well as member of the Presidium of the German Association of Judges, judge of the land court of Magdeburg Stefan Caspari and chief judge of the land court of Bonn Wolfgang Schmitz-Justen. First Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian Supreme Court Alexander Fedortsov said that due to many years of fruitful cooperation with the German Fund, Belarusian judges gained valuable experience and introduced most efficient methods of work practiced by their German counterparts. First of all it pertains to the selection, training and maintaining of high professional level of judges and staff of the organizations under the Justice Ministry. “We constantly share experience and discuss topical issues relating to the application of criminal penalties. Due to the constant improvement of laws and practices related to the assignment of punishment for criminal offences, we managed to reach a reasonable balance between the type of punishment for criminal offences and severity of crime and the personality of those found responsible,” Alexander Fedortsov underlined.
