MINSK, 20 April (BelTA) - Pope Francis has met with Chernobyl clean-up workers from Belarus and Ukraine, BelTA learned from the Roman Catholic Church in Belarus.
“Out of 50 clean-up workers, eight people arrived in the Vatican from Belarus together with Metropolitan of Minsk and Mogilev, Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz,” the representative of the Roman Catholic Church in Belarus said.
Pope Francis welcomed the pilgrims from Ukraine and Belarus who arrived to the Vatican within the framework of the international conference dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident. “By praying for the victims of this disaster, we express our gratitude to the clean-up workers. We are also grateful for all the initiatives aimed at alleviating suffering and repair the damage. Christ has risen!” Pope Francis was quoted as saying.
