MINSK, 2 February (BelTA) – There are no reasons to believe that there is African swine fever (ASF) in Belarus at present, BelTA learned from Belarusian Agriculture and Food Minister Leonid Zayats.
The official assured that there are no reasons for concern. “Our products are safe. We have no reasons to say that there is African swine fever in Belarus,” said Leonid Zayats.
Two foci of African swine fever were detected in Belarus in 2013. Both Russia and the World Organization for Animal Health were informed about it. “We took the necessary measures to localize these foci and prevent the disease from spreading across Belarus,” noted the official.
In particular, the Council of Ministers of Belarus passed the relevant executive order. A national HQ was established to organize the containment of the disease. Measures were taken with regard to the pig farms that had failed to put in place proper biological safeguards.
As far as talks, in particular, Russian statements about the detection of the genome of the African swine fever virus in products of Belarusian companies are concerned, the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Minister doubted the objectiveness of the research the statements were based on because Russian methods have not been legalized either within the framework of the World Organization for Animal Health or the Single Economic Space. Apart from that, the samples of the products were taken without involving representatives of Belarus.
